Call for Artists – Art Ex: Multi-Day Visual Arts Experience

Local, national and international artists are invited to submit proposals to be presented as part of “Phantasm of the Water: Yours to Explore”.

Art Ex is a multi-day visual arts festival being held September 27th to 30th, 2012 in the Exploits Valley in Central Newfoundland.

Visual artists working in all media are encouraged to submit innovative and fresh ideas under this theme. Artists may want to consider the following: exhibitions, site-specific works, art talks, hands-on workshops, information workshops, installations, short film making, dinner series speaker or panel discussion participant.

Activities and events may take place at traditional and non-traditional indoor or outdoor venues in communities through the Exploits Valley.

About Art Ex

Art Ex is an annual regional event that celebrates the rich visual arts tradition and diversity in the Exploits Valley.

Art Ex held its inaugural events August 6-8, 2010. In its second year, July 7th to 11th 2011, it expanded into a four day festival. This multi-day festival included an opening festival launch, guest speaker, artist circles, youth and adult workshops, interactive art venues, an exhibition, and live musical performances. Activities occurred concurrently throughout the region. Similar events are being planned for the September 27th to 30th, Art Ex 2012 experience.

Artists are encouraged to consider the following when planning proposals for Art Ex:

- the theme of "Phantasm of the Water: Yours to Explore”
- concepts or images created by the imagination-imaging, visualization- pipe dream
- the wonders of the water, captivated or fascinated by the wonderment or awe
- exploration of water, elements and objects found within or with which it is associated
- human interaction with the natural environment/each other
- concepts of memory/time/history
- the water as creator/source, giving life to
- fragility/transience vs. strength/permanence

Submission Procedure

All submissions must include the following:

1. Proposal: A brief description (maximum 300 words) clearly outlining your exhibition proposal. Please provide details including proposed activity/project, venue requirements, materials, equipment, travel considerations and any other resources required.
2. Artist Statement: Maximum 500 words
3. Curriculum Vitae
4. Images/Support Material: 15-20 images with name and title. Video artist may submit a video no longer than 5 minutes.
5. Image list detailing medium and size of works.
6. Self addressed, sufficiently stamped envelope (for return only).
7. Deadline for submission is June 1st, 2012
